With many of the things that have happened recently in the media and at the request of a follower, I am reposting this article.

If you spend any amount of time reading articles on you may have seen things written that you wondered where they came from. This would include pictures or graphic images. This article is intended to provide a perspective to potential authors about what I consider as the proper way to cite, quote and include images in their articles. I do this because I believe that there is some misunderstanding on the part of people about this type of forum and how what they write or use in their articles can be considered. In addition it is to provide clarification that just because both the article that they are writing and that of the source of their information, there is not a direct an automatic link. This means that if the author uses another authors material without (Thanks, David Pfaff for the review) providing credit they are violating the Intellectual Property Rights of the original author.
I am sure that many people who write on have had some experience at some point in their lives with the proper way of citing a piece of text from some other author. One of the most common ways of doing this is by using the APA Format as shown in the photo above. In and many other online formats it is possible to use a hyperlink that does the same thing. One way that I do this is to highlight the cited or quoted text by pressing the right mousse button and dragging it over the text. Once it is highlighted it is necessary to click on the little chain links on the tool bar at the top of the screen. Doing this will show a small hyperlink box where the URL for the location of the text being cited can be inserted. This box looks like the image below.
You will notice that this image is not credited because it is simply a screen shot of this article so there is no need for a citation or credit. However, you will notice that the image shows the link for the APA Format image shown above. In any case the author needs to provide proper credit to any information which they obtain from other authors or sources.

Images are another very powerful way for an author to tell the story they are telling. However, in the same way that text must be cited back to the source, so must any images used. You can see in this article that there are several ways that these images can be given credit back to the producer of the material. One is shown below by provide a direct link to the image via a text hyperlink. Another way is to highlight the image and use the hyperlink dialog box to connect the image back to the originating source. This same method should be used for multimedia links in the article.
The use of text, images and multimedia in an article on or any other online blogging site have the same property right protections for the originator of the information as those for music, films or games. We have probably all read or heard about the various law suits and legal actions against individuals and organizations for using (pirating) materials created by others without permission or without giving proper credit. In the educational setting this could result in the issuance of a failing grade. In the business world there is the potential that this could lead to criminal charges or civil actions for money. While I have not heard of anyone being charged or sued for using material in this kind of format, it may only be a matter of time before it happens. It is my belief that if any author provides appropriate credit and a link back to the source where the data was obtained from, then the potential for actions is reduced (if an attorney reads this please correct me if I am wrong).
The author is an average person who has experienced a wide variety of life experiences. He has not written books of any repute. The majority of his writings have been articles here on , some of which have been featured in the Pulse section and others that have not. The goal is to provide knowledge to his readership and followers while opening topics for discussion in a forum where anyone can jump in to explore the many perspectives of the topic, some of which may not be all that common in everyday discourse.
